Join Burnaby author Linda DeMeulemeester for an evening of thrills and chills as she reads from Grim Hill: the Family Secret. This is the latest book in a series described as “Harry Potter meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.

Linda DeMeulemeester lives and teaches in Burnaby. She credits her grandmother, a natural storyteller who was born over a hundred years ago, for her love of mystery and suspense. The Secret of Grim Hill, DeMeulemeester’s debut novel, won the Ontario Library Association’s Silver Birch Award in 2008 and was named one of the Top Ten “Great Books of the Year” by the Canadian Toy Testing Council. It was also a nominee for the 2009-10 Red Cedar Book Award.

Learn how to sign up for a free email account to send messages to friends, family and other contacts. We will cover signing up for your own account, composing and receiving messages, setting up contacts, managing folders, viewing and sending attachments, and practical tips on junk email and account usage.

Before you register: This a course for beginners who have never or barely used email programs. Experienced email users may wish to pursue more in-depth courses through School District #41. Basic knowledge of computers and the Internet is necessary for this course. New computer users must take Basic Introduction to Computers and Introduction to the Internet first.

Mondays, October 18 to November 22
10:15 am - 11:00 am

Age: Walkers to 24 months
Clapping, rhyming and singing - perfect for active toddlers.
Storytimes are 45 minutes long with the first 15 minutes set aside for reading together with your toddler (books provided!), listening to music, meeting other families and socializing.
No registration required. Come early - space is limited. Caregivers must attend with children. Siblings welcome.

Monday, October 18
10:30 am - 12:30 pm

If you've never used a computer, and want to give it a try, this class is for you. Find out what a useful tool a computer can be – learn to use a mouse and discover what you can do with Windows.

Before you register: This course is for beginners only. If you have experience using a computer but want to learn more, try one of our other introductory courses or pursue more in-depth courses through School District #41.

Tuesdays, October 19 to November 23
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Age: Newborn to 18 months
Join Jon for a lively hour of stories, rhymes and songs for infants and their dads, uncles, stepdads, foster dads, grandfathers and other male caregivers.
No registration required. Come early to this new program - space is limited.

Tuesday, October 19

Learn the basics of using a web browser (Internet Explorer), see common website navigation features, use a search engine (Google) to perform simple searches, and find important and reliable resources on the Burnaby Public Library website.

Before you register: This is a course for beginners who have never or barely used the Internet. More experienced Internet users may wish to pursue more in-depth courses through School District #41. Basic knowledge of computers is necessary for this course. New computer users must take Basic Introduction to Computers first.

Have you ever wondered about the differences between writing novels and television scripts? Join local award-winning writer Susin Nielsen for a lively exploration of the challenges and joys in writing each genre. Find out how a TV script is formatted versus a book, see a clip from one of Susin’s shows and have a chance to do a bit of acting! Susin will also talk about her own journey to becoming a writer, and will read short excerpts from her teen novels Word Nerd and Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom.

Susin Nielsen wrote 16 episodes of Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High and four of the novels in the Degrassi book series. She’s also written for many well-received TV series including Ready or Not, Madison, The Adventures of Shirley Holmes, Edgemont, Heartland and Robson Arms. Nielsen also adapted Alice, I Think for television, a half-hour comedy series based on the best-selling teen novels by Susan Juby. Along with her two YA novels, she’s also written three picture books.

A free public workshop presented by local High School Counsellor, Miss Mirye Kim.  The topics covered will include the requirements needed to enter major universities and programs in Canada, including language requirements.
